What Are the Benefits of Dentures?
Missing teeth are more than just a cosmetic concern. Missing teeth can impact your oral and overall health, making it difficult to eat and speak. Full or partial dentures can benefit our Friendswood, TX patients in several ways. Some of the most common benefits of dentures include:
- Improved ability to speak and chew
- Dentures are easily maintained
- Prevent further oral health problems arising from missing teeth
- Restored appearance of your smile
Should I Get Dentures?
Dentures can replace anywhere from a few to a whole arch of teeth. Partial dentures fill in gaps left by tooth loss and use healthy existing teeth for support while full dentures replace an entire upper or lower arch and use the shape of the jaw or denture adhesive for retention. Some patients opt to have a hybrid denture solution that combines dental implants placed in the jawbone and a denture appliance that attaches to these posts. Dentures can last for several years when cared for properly.
If you are missing teeth or have damaged teeth that cannot be restored and must be removed, we welcome you to schedule a denture consultation with Dr. Nishino. As a skilled general dentist, he offers natural-looking and functional replacement teeth that can meet your cosmetic preferences, treatment needs, and budget requirements. Dentures offer a convenient and cost-effective solution to tooth loss and are made of high-quality materials that are lighter in weight and look more natural than ever.
How Do Dentures Work?
During your tooth replacement consultation, Dr. Nishino will listen to your concerns about your smile and determine if any existing teeth will be used to help support your denture or if they need to be extracted to improve your overall oral health. In some cases, we can extract damaged teeth and place an immediate denture that you can wear until your mouth heals and your permanent denture has been created. Our team will take impressions of your mouth, which our professional partner dental lab will use to make your dentures. Dr. Nishino will send specific instructions on how to create the shape, size, and color of your replacement teeth so that they fit your features and deliver a natural-looking result.
We use only the highest quality material to make denture appliances, including lightweight acrylic, resin, and metal framework. Partial dentures will be custom shaded to blend evenly with your surrounding teeth and full appliances will be created with a natural gum and tooth appeal so that wearing a denture will not be obvious to others. Once your dentures are complete and arrive in our office, we will bring you back to fit them in your mouth or affix them to your implants. Dr. Nishino will evaluate the fit for comfort and stability and our team will let you know how to store, clean, and care for your new dentures.
What Can I Expect After Getting Dentures?
Patients find that modern dentures are often more comfortable to wear than those created in the past. However, it may take some time for you to get used to wearing your tooth replacement. As they begin to seem like a natural part of your smile, it should become easier to eat and speak normally. Partial dentures are attached securely around existing teeth through metal or plastic clasps, but you may find the need to use a little denture paste to hold a full denture in place. Dr. Nishino can adjust your appliances as needed to help make wearing dentures as comfortable and natural-feeling as possible.
Keeping your dentures clean each day can help your tooth replacement serve your smile for several years. We recommend that you use a mild toothpaste and denture brush (or toothbrush) to clean your dentures after you eat. You should also take your dentures out of your mouth while sleeping and store them in water to prevent your tooth replacement from becoming too dry and altering the fit. While dentures are replacing your natural teeth, Dr. Nishino still recommends that you visit our practice routinely for cleanings and exams. This gives us a chance to check the health of your teeth and gums and fit of your dentures. Our team can also clean your dentures with a special solution while you are here.
Are Dentures Covered by Insurance?
Depending on your insurance plan, partial or full dentures may be covered, or at least in part. Our Friendswood, TX team will contact your insurance provider for information on your personal benefits. To help cover the cost of care, we accept several convenient payment options. Made Ya Smile Dental also partners with CareCredit® to bring low-cost financing solutions to our patients and make tooth replacement solutions even more affordable.
Dentures FAQ
Can I wear dentures at night?
Although you can wear your dentures at night, we recommend removing your false teeth before bed to give your jawbone and gums a chance to relax. Dentures apply light pressure on these areas, so we do not advise wearing your dentures for 24 hours at a time. Once you remove your dentures at night, you can clean and store them in water until the morning.
Does having dentures hurt?
Minor discomfort and irritation can occur initially, but as you get used to your dentures, they become more comfortable. However, if you continue to feel uncomfortable or experience irritation longer than the suggested adjustment period, please call our office to determine if you need to come in for an adjustment.
Are there any foods I can't eat with dentures?
Natural-looking dentures not only appear like your natural teeth, but they also function like them too. It will take some time, in the beginning, to acclimate to eating with dentures, especially hard or sticky foods. Once you get used to them, you can consume most foods. We do recommend against chewing gum with dentures. Sticky gum can get stuck and discolor your dentures, and even potentially break the denture seal and cause loose teeth.
